Where Should You Travel in Thailand During the Rainy Season?

One of the most common questions we receive from international travelers is:

“Is it worth visiting Thailand during the rainy season?”

The answer is yes.

Many people imagine that it rains all day across the country, but that’s rarely the case. Thailand’s rainy season is very different from what many travelers expect.

Rainy Season Doesn't Mean Constant Rain

In destinations like Bangkok, rain usually comes in short bursts. You may experience heavy rain with strong winds for 30 minutes to an hour, and then the sky clears again. It’s common to enjoy sunshine before and after a shower.

Because of this, most sightseeing, shopping, food tours, and cultural experiences can still be enjoyed with only minor adjustments to your schedule.

As local travel planners, we simply recommend keeping a small umbrella or rain jacket with you and staying flexible if a storm passes through.

Which Islands Are Best During Thailand's Rainy Season?

If you’re planning a beach holiday between July and October, choosing the right destination is important.

Recommended Islands

  • Koh Samui – Beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, excellent restaurants, and generally better weather during this period.
  • Koh Phangan – Famous for more than just the Full Moon Party, with peaceful beaches, wellness retreats, and nature.
  • Koh Tao – Ideal for snorkeling, diving, and travelers looking for a smaller island atmosphere.

These islands are located in the Gulf of Thailand, where the weather pattern is often more favorable while the Andaman Coast experiences heavier rainfall.

Islands to Be More Cautious About

  • Phuket
  • Krabi

These destinations are stunning, but during the rainy season they are more likely to experience tropical weather systems. When a tropical storm moves through, it can rain continuously for much of the day, and rough seas may affect island-hopping tours or boat transfers.

This doesn’t mean you should avoid Phuket or Krabi entirely—it simply means the weather is generally less predictable during this time of year.

Our Recommendation as Local Travel Concierges

Instead of avoiding Thailand altogether, choose destinations that match the season.

For travelers visiting during the rainy months, we often recommend:

  • A few days exploring Bangkok’s food, temples, markets, and rooftop bars.
  • Then flying to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Koh Tao for your beach holiday.

With the right itinerary, the rainy season can actually be one of the best times to visit Thailand. You’ll often enjoy fewer crowds, greener landscapes, and better hotel rates while still experiencing everything the country has to offer.

Don’t let the rainy season stop you from visiting Thailand. Let local expertise help you choose the right destinations, and you’ll discover that a little rain is just part of the tropical experience.
